Lyn Bentley is an artist based in Kaikōura, New Zealand, specialising in straw marquetry and creating contemporary works from this centuries-old craft. What makes her practice distinctive is her fully hands-on approach. She grows her own straw, then harvests, dries, and dyes it into a wide spectrum of natural and vibrant colours.
Once prepared, the straw is split, flattened, cut, and glued to form geometric and organic compositions that play with light, texture, and colour. Each blade carries a natural sheen that shifts with changing light, giving the works a dynamic, almost luminous quality. Lyn's pieces draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape whilst revealing the unexpected beauty of such a humble material.
